HISTORY. Little is known about the life Aidan Clayce led in the Fourth World. For one, Aidan Clayce is not his real name – that has been lost for all eternity, and any who do know keep it a closely guarded secret. What are available for public record are the following facts:
Aidan, Riley, and Orin witnessed the formation of Yahweh’s Creation, and observed the rise and fall of Gaea (the Fifth World as Mage and Werewolf History tells it) from a distance. They intervened on select occasions; Aidan’s largest contribution was the fact that he came to the First Men in dragon form and taught them magic. Their next major move as a group, however, was the establishment of the Methuselah during the early years of Mesopotamian Civilization. Aidan was hell bent on repenting for the sins he had caused by orchestrating the destruction of his own world, and believed that the Fifth World needed guardians. The Hunters of the Methuselah – his brain child, and the first among the conspiracies to fight the War for the Balance – were meant to be those guardians. From that point all the way until the 11th Century, Aidan and his companions (the closest of those being the Malice Kings of the past) moved quietly in the background of history, spreading the influence of the Methuselah across the Vigil of Man, rallying more to their cause, safeguarding the Fifth World from interference in the form of forces and powerful entities that existed beyond Earth. However, this was, by far, the darkest period in Aidan’s history. He was alternately distanced himself from everyone and fed his rage and self-hate, and was only too often wracked by guilt and haunted by his own sins. He was intent on channeling all of this negativity and ignoring the way it damaged him through working tirelessly towards establishing the Methuselah. His first turning point came when he met Setsuna Shinta in the ancient Japanese kingdom of Yamatai. Setsuna Shinta was an Acanthus Mage, and the first Fatespinner of the Fifth World. She knew Aidan and Riley for who they were in spite of how they attempted to hide their identities and where they had come from. She constantly challenged Aidan, even if it meant facing the full force of his rage. This may be the main reason why Aidan eventually fell in love with her: she stayed when so many others chose to leave, and she continued to believe in the fact that there was good in him while rejecting the idea that he was a monster or an untouchable god. Unfortunately, Aidan could not fully rise above the darkness within him, and continuously denied the fact that he cared for her. It did not help, of course, that he believed that he was responsible for the curse that Project Deus Ex Machina had placed upon Hikaru, Setsuna’s younger brother. The wedge that drove itself between them at that point was not one of her doing, but his. In spite of Setsuna’s best efforts, Aidan fell back on bad habits and continued to drive the Methuselah almost relentlessly towards the vision he had for the conspiracy. Because of this, her death during the tail end of the 15th Century – a result of her sacrificing herself to become one of the Seals against Nyx dealt a great blow to Aidan’s faith in himself and his cause. He started to distance himself from everyone, believing that a “god” like himself should not apply his touch so heavily upon Yahweh’s creation. It did not help, of course, that by then Riley Falner – a man who was, in many ways, the other side of the coin and a natural counter-balance to Aidan – was imprisoned by his nature as an ascended vampire, and was often locked in Deep Slumber for decades at a time. Setsuna’s later return as one of the Great Spirits and personal decision to stay at Aidan’s side did not actually help. Where Aidan should have viewed it as a chance to redeem himself, the Voidseeker only saw Setsuna as a representation of the full sum of his faults, especially in light of what he “did” to her. The beginnings of another turning point in Aidan’s life occurred in the 17th Century. While he was busy establishing the Methuselah’s power base in Great Britain and monitoring the events of the Secret War for Heaven, Aidan witnessed an angel falling to the Prime Material Plane, scarred by the massive release of energy that had come from the merging of the three Creations of Yahweh, Elaine Belloc, and Lucifer Morningstar. Aidan startled himself by saving the angel’s life through tying the angel’s existence to his own, effectively becoming its Source. That angel was Zaghiel, and Aidan later gave him a human name: Rethe Kyriff. In teaching Rethe how to be human and being a recipient of the perfect devotion that Rethe showered on him without question and without regard for the fact that Aidan himself felt that he did not deserve it, Aidan began to confront many of the issues that he had avoided with Setsuna. The Methuselah’s ill treatment of Rethe – a lesser example of how they regarded Hikaru, but no less grave in its magnitude – also served to be an eye opener for him, and marked the beginning of the end of Aidan’s self-imposed paralysis. Aidan’s paralysis broke down in earnest in 2012. The Methuselah had been deteriorating at an alarming rate, and the Fifth World appeared to be slated towards tipping in the wrong direction. Everything came to a head when the Wiseman’s Committee, in open defiance to the wisdom of their Founder, declared that Hikaru Shinta – then Blade King and Wolf of Zangyaku, and on his 27th Life Cycle with Death – was a renegade. They destroyed his soul cages, and nearly resulted in his destruction. This, for Aidan, was the final straw. He turned his back on the Methuselah, and created Netsach, a conspiracy forged with one singular purpose: to be everything that the Methuselah had failed to be, in the name of fighting the War for the Balance. This also marked the year of the destruction of the Exarchs at Aidan’s hands, and his full acceptance of the love that Rethe had for him. Sometime before Operation Nyx, Aidan sacrificed the power that the death of the Fourth World conferred upon him on the 195th Floor of the Unnamed Tower. He hoped, in this way, to become less of a god and more of a denizen in the Fifth World, a place that he had fought so hard to protect. He then threw himself into the preparations for Operation Nyx in earnest, and faced her on the battlefield with Riley, Rethe and Setsuna – then a Great Spirit – at his side. Directly after Operation Nyx, Aidan was (gently) removed from his position as leader of Netsach by the other Malice Kings – his closest companions all felt that the Voidseeker had done more than enough with regard to the Vigil, much less with regard to keeping the Fifth World safe. They wanted to give the one man responsible for everything the break that he deserved, and an honest chance to live in the world that he used to constantly try to save in the past. After some quailing, Aidan decided to settle into “retired” life and promptly married Rethe. Unfortunately, the Breaking of the Veil and the First Reforms pulled Aidan back into the Vigil only too quickly. Aidan became Liandrin Delacroix’s second-in-command, and also became the Kaiser of Liyab, the Philippine division of Netsach: an odd parallelism to the fact that the last position he held in the Methuselah was Kaiser of Anino, the conspiracy’s division in the country. He was on the field during the entirety of the Darkest Vigil, and participated in every major Netsach-related engagement while safeguarding the Philippines (he is, in fact, best known for his participation in the Second Battle at Manila Bay). He also became one of the bridges between Netsach and the Methuselah, utilizing his intimate knowledge of the workings of the Methuselah in order to smooth diplomatic relations between the two conspiracies and aid in the Methuselah’s rehabilitation. It was clear to many, from the get-go, that the loss of the powers Aidan gained from being the Last Dragon of the Fourth World hardly reduced his capabilities, and his formidable presence was more often than not enough of a deterrent for many hostile parties during the Darkest Vigil. Aidan relinquished his position as Kaiser of Liyab directly after the Armistice at Blaece, and went back to his duties as Fürst of Netsach. He is still his conspiracy’s representative on the Wiseman’s Committee of the Methuselah. CURRENT STATUS. He currently spends most of his time traveling the world, teaching Philosophy, Theology, Occult knowledge, History, and Vigil-related courses in universities and Hunter schools across the globe. The university that he teaches the most in, however, is Ateneo de Manila University. On another note, he and Rethe Kyriff have often been cited in lifestyle magazines, and have been voted, on several occasions, as the World’s Best Couple. It should also be noted that if Aidan is not traveling, he’s often found napping in dragon form behind the Falner Manor, serving as a massive draconic playground to the children who live on the estate grounds. PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE. Prior to 2012, an initial impression of Aidan often left one with the sense that he was distant and aloof, uninterested in the concerns of others and lacking in empathy. In actuality, however his penchant for distancing himself from others was a coping mechanism that better allowed him to perform his duties or follow through with his beliefs. It was also be a symptom of numbness given the many things that he has experienced, and the great sense of loss that he has encountered at several points of his life. At present, however, Aidan has become warmer and much more personable, and openly displays the affection that he holds for the fledgling Fifth World. He is also not afraid to use the powers that he still has at his disposal. It is clear that Aidan has a strong sense of duty. He wishes to live through and live out his principles, and be an example to all of mankind. Unfortunately, he has not quite rid himself of the God Complex that he once possessed as the Last Son of the Fourth World. When the going gets tough, the Voidseeker only too often takes action for the sake of others at a heavy cost to himself. THREAT LEVEL. IMMEASURABLE/NON-FACTOR. The Keepers of today’s Vigil and the denizens of the Fifth World has the good fortune of not being Aidan’s enemies. Because he relinquished his legacy as the Last Son of the Fourth World, Aidan is no longer bound by the practical rules of the universe: the rules that bind him now are rules of his own creation. Nevertheless, the love he possesses for the Fifth World and the faith that he continues to have for humanity stays his hand for the moment. ELIAS' NOTES. Father Aidan, I am sure that at some point, you are going to check your dossier and see right through the encryptions that I have on my notes. I only have one thing to tell you. It is good to see that you are happy. | ||
