HISTORY
Watchers stationed at Anino were aware of Gideon Reyes’ potential as a Minstrel the moment he turned eight, a year before he discovered it himself. They monitored his situation closely, but only moved in when he was eleven years old: the boy had lashed out at some of the bullies in his school, and his cutting scream had ended up blowing out every window in his school building. The Order of Minstrels took custody of him at that point, and Lucrezia Rodriguez – then First Minstrel of the Order – personally took it upon herself to train him.
Gideon continued to go to school as normal while balancing his training under Lucrezia. One incident that would mark him early on in life was his first encounter with Hikaru Shinta, a boy who would later become one of his closest friends. While he was traveling with Lucrezia in Japan, Gideon got a hold of a score of the Music of Command and played it out of curiosity; he ended up summoning an oni, and was nearly killed by the creature. Hikaru was the one who saved his life.
Anino sponsored Gideon’s scholarship to Ateneo de Manila University, and Gideon immediately began to train as a Hunter of the Methuselah – he was two years older than the majority of his batch mates because of all of the time he had spent abroad with Lucrezia, his mentor. The first friend he made in his batch was Matteo Tupaz, a Rahu Blood Talon. He later came in contact with Paolo Inojosa, Jennifer Deveras, and Neeka Zobel de Ayala, the rest of his future blade mates. After some initial difficulties, the group eventually became a proper blade, and took a name for themselves on the night of their initiation: the Pack, to honor the one truly supernatural member of their group.
As soon as Gideon and the rest of his blade mates reached the Sixth Circle, each one of them was placed in charge of a blade of novices. Gideon was assigned to handle Wolf’s Choice. He ended up growing rather close to their members, and the things that they experienced together in 2012 made them all very close to each other. In fact, Gideon even fell in love Deirdra Max, the Riskbreaker of the crew.
Gideon, together with the Pack, defected from the Methuselah and joined Netsach. This meant even more to Gideon than it did to his friends because of his close ties to Hikaru. A little after Operation Hokkaido, the Minstrel began to awaken to a different reality with his music as the Grand Song of Measuring began to awaken within him. He mastered his Grand Song within a few months, and continued to give his all in 2012 right up to Operation Nyx.
The first thing that Gideon did after the Keepers of the Vigil defeated Nyx was involve himself more deeply with the Order of his mentor. He also married Deirdra Max, and focused his energies on the recovery and training of succeeding generations of Minstrels. By the time the Darkest Vigil hit, he had replaced Lucrezia as the First Minstrel of the Order. He was the one who ended up moving the main base of the Order to the Philippines, a move that many agreed with given how unstable things were outside of his home country.
Since Deirdra was heavily involved with her work during the Darkest Vigil, Gideon was the one who held the fort for the both of them, making sure that he was present both for his comrades at Liyab and for his own children. He was one of the first artists who signed under Vice Records, and continued composing and performing throughout the Darkest Vigil as a part of Cerberus’ initiative to boost morale for Netsach’s hunters and improve public relations between humans and supernaturals.
CURRENT STATUS
Gideon has recently retired from his career as a musician, and his position at the Order of Minstrels. He’s still very content with being a house husband, and supporting his wife in whatever way he can.
PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE
In his younger years, Gideon’s preoccupation with the idea that all things in the world must be balanced properly may have been an adverse reaction to how extreme conditions had the tendency to shape his life in ways that he was never entirely ready for. For one, his awakening as a Minstrel already set himself apart from everyone, even his own parents. For another, his defiance of a direct order from his mentor nearly got him killed. His need to ensure that everything and everyone around him has its place may, quite certainly, be read as psychological projection.
At present, Gideon is a far more stable individual whose coping mechanisms have become an essential part of his world view. The Song of Measuring gives him insight on things that he may, at times, be completely unprepared for, or unwilling to see: with this sort of ability at his disposal, it would be difficult for a less principled individual to resist the temptation of maneuvering what is in front of him to suit his own purposes. That Gideon has not abused his powers in any fashion since he “tuned in” to the Grand Song is telling of his mental discipline and emotional fortitude.
THREAT LEVEL
NOTABLE/NON-FACTOR. Gideon’s disposition alone already makes him easy to deal with. Furthermore, even though he is one of the few Minstrels of the Grand Song and a Hunter of repute, it is clear that his current interests lie in living the rest of his days out peacefully. The likelihood of him becoming an issue for Pax Deorum or the Vigil at present is slim.
