HISTORY
Kasumi is the head of the Okinawan Aoi Clan, a long and proud line of Rivers Hunters who managed to intimately tie themselves in with Zangyaku over several centuries. Her ancestors were among the first to ever become oni-tsukai under Hikaru’s leadership, and every member of their clan has followed in their footsteps. Kasumi herself – as a proud daughter of an Aoi woman, and a Polish Brother in Violence whose own ancestor had been among the first of the Brotherhood to enter Japan – was no exception to the rule: her parents sent her to Hirato as soon when she was only six years old, and she started training immediately. She actually met Akihiko, her future husband, soon after she completed her initiation at the age of 12 – they were batch mates. By the time they were both 16, they were high-ranking oni-tsukai with licenses in several other conspiracies, and they were completely besotted with each other. They married each other two years later, and Akihiko “killed” his own surname in order to become a Rivers Hunter like his wife.
When Kasumi became pregnant at 23, she and Akihiko immediately knew that their child was going to be Hikaru Shinta because Akihiko was one of the Wardens of the Wolf. Kasumi did not hesitate to become a Warden herself, and agree to move together with her family to Seigi. Soon after her initiation, she and her husband quietly sat down in order to talk about their situation. They agreed on one important matter: that they needed to raise Hikaru as one of their own, and give the boy a proper family. The pair applied themselves to this perfectly as soon as Hikaru entered their lives. Unfortunately, Hikaru ended up awakening violently at 10, and freakish manifestations of the powers at his disposal neatly leveled a part of Tokyo. Akihiko lost his life in an attempt to bring his son back in one piece. Kasumi arrived at the scene just in time to see her young son crying over his dying father. The two of them barely had enough time to say goodbye.
Losing Akihiko utterly crushed Kasumi. While she never blamed Hikaru for her husband’s death, she lapsed into a deep melancholia that ended up lasting for nearly four years. This was a difficult period both for her and her son, as Hikaru did not know where to place himself in his mother’s life, and Kasumi was completely incapable of processing her own grief, much less helping Hikaru with his. It took Hikaru’s suicide attempts to draw Kasumi out of her own slump, as the Blade King’s self-destructive actions were incredibly clear signals on how he felt over killing his father, and how much he needed his mother.
From that point on, Kasumi applied herself with newfound fervor to her roles as an oni-tsukai, a Warden of the Wolf, and the mother of the Blade King. She held the fort for her son whenever he had to leave Japan’s shores – this was especially evident in 2011 and 2012, when Hikaru was most active in the Philippines. She also participated in nearly every Zangyaku engagement that took place in 2012, including Operation Nyx.
Kasumi returned to Japan directly after Operation Nyx; she had previously been shuttling between Japan and the Philippines as Hikaru’s representative, and as a Magistrate on her own right. Her official position in Zangyaku was to serve every function that came with being Mother of the Wolf: Guardian of the Wolf’s Ward, Lady of the Night of the Whisperers, and Leader of Zangyaku in her son’s place whenever he happened to be too busy to handle Japan. She remained in Japan throughout the Breaking of the Veil, the First Reforms, and the Darkest Vigil. She also took charge of Zangyaku completely between 2024 and 2042, while Hikaru was serving a lifetime as Death.
CURRENT STATUS
After the Armistice at Blaece, Kasumi retired from the Searing Wind. She is still the Guardian of the Wolf’s Ward, but has relinquished her leadership of the Whisperers to a successor that she had handpicked herself. One of the only non-negotiable requests that she has made of her family and extended family members is that they uphold their monthly tradition of having dinner with each other. She’s not too pleased that Alistair and Kaizen often forget to come around.
PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE
Kasumi is a woman who is and always will be singularly defined by two things: what she chooses to believe in, and what she chooses to call her own. Every word she speaks and every action she takes is calculated and deliberate, geared towards supporting her conspiracy, what is left of her family, and the Vigil as a whole. There is no room for compromise, and no room for desires that are extraneous to the matter at hand. Any potential sources of conflict are measured accordingly, and whatever can be assimilated into her world view will be. Whatever cannot be integrated into her world will remain outside of her vision, and – in the event that they get in the way – destroyed with impunity. This may explain her relationship with Akihiko, from its conception all the way to its end. She would not have married him if he had not become a Rivers Hunter. Furthermore, after he had become a part of his world and it was clear that there was no way of saving his life or resurrecting him, a part of her needed to retreat in order to give herself time to recalibrate. Said recalibration involved deciding that – in the interest of never placing herself in the same position again – attachments are out of the question for her. She cannot possibly risk losing herself in that fashion again, given how many people are relying on her now.
Because of this, Kasumi does not believe in impossibilities. There is always a way, regardless of whether she is capable of making it for herself or must let other people pick up the work in her stead (and, even in that, she will do everything in her power to assist the parties in question). It does not matter how long it will take in Kasumi’s eyes: she acknowledges that some things will not come into fruition until she is dead and gone. Nevertheless, she will apply herself with every step in that process efficiently and methodically, and be there when she has to – or leave when it is clear that her touch will only go so far, or upset the situation. Change is necessary in order for things to improve, and all things can be moved – much like chess pieces on a board – to form an entirely different picture. If Kasumi herself cannot be the hand that pushes these things to happen, she will aid the ones who can be.
THREAT LEVEL
COMMENDABLE/NON-FACTOR. Kasumi is “young” as far as Rivers Hunters go, and has already proven her mettle against some of the best minds on and off of the battlefield. Her lineage among the Rivers is old and grounded stolidly within the Vigil, and makes her capable of taking on marks that few others can handle. Furthermore, as the Lady of the Night, she possesses a network whose depth and breadth are yet to be calculated properly, and the drive to enforce her beliefs against anything and anyone that threatens to stand in her way. Fortunately, her beliefs, at the moment, align with Pax Deorum’s. In this sense, it is difficult to imagine that Kasumi will be a threat to the Vigil anytime in the near future.

- Contact Magistrate Aoi re: hostile movements within Asia. She would know best. This can be done after the next family dinner.
