HISTORY
Kalika’s earliest memories involved her time under one of the many power hungry warlords terrorizing the hinterlands of Cambodia. Themis records have revealed that she was a victim of human trafficking, reluctantly sold by her parents into a life of slavery and shunted throughout Southeast Asia. The moment the man who bought her discovered that she was one of the Changing Breeds, he subsequently sold her to the warlord due to his interest in having supernaturals fight his battles for him. She was eight years old.
Two years later, Zangyaku’s oni-tsukai, under the command of the Blade King himself, neutralized war lords, syndicates and other interest groups that were terrorizing the local supernatural community: Kalika’s commander was no exception. Hikaru happened to be handling his army personally, and ended up meeting Kalika on the field. The girl’s fighting spirit struck her: even after she had watched all of her comrades go down and even after she had been heavily injured at his hands, she was willing to fight to the death if it meant having one shot at injuring him. In response to that, Hikaru spared her life. He walked away from her, on the pretense of returning to his men. Interestingly enough, Kalika ended up following him.
One of the first things that Hikaru did the moment the two of them returned to Japan was adopt Kalika as his sister, with Kasumi Aoi’s blessing. The two grew incredibly close, and Kalika primarily went into Zangyaku in order to remain at her adoptive brother’s side. She participated in the Ceremony of Measuring at the age of 14, in the spring months of 2012. Her replacement of her predecessor – another Changing Breed like herself – made her one of the youngest members of the Searing Wind in Zangyaku’s history.
Kalika spent most of her time operating within Southeast Asia in 2012. She stayed as close as possible to Hikaru, and was a part of several major engagements, including Operation Nyx. It was during this year that she also came in contact with members of the Wolf’s Choice, the Pack and the Rockin’ Rollas – she did, in fact, end up falling in love with Juan Antonio Reyes dela Cruz, grew attached to the likes of Deirdra Max, Gideon Reyes and Aria Skye, aided Halo Jafelice with her First Change, and became one of Cisco Montelibano-Profaci’s closest friends.
After the end of Operation Nyx, Kalika applied for hunting licenses with Netsach and the Midnight Riders. By the time she married Inquisitor Juan Antonio Reyes dela Cruz in 2019 (a ceremony that Father Drake Badd presided over), she held high-ranking positions in both of those conspiracies beyond her position as a member of the Searing Wind. Naturally, marriage did not slow her down in the least. She stood at the forefront of fighting for Changing Breed rights within Asia during the First Reforms, and went wherever her brother Hikaru Shinta told her to be.
When the Darkest Vigil occurred, Kalika was the Searing Wind member who had been placed in charge of diffusing political situations unique to the Changing Breed, and later became the head of all anti-Grendal operations in Asia. She took a particular interest in ensuring that Cambodia, the country that Hikaru Shinta originally found her in, stayed stable, namely because she personally dismantled “undesirable” elements on Cambodian soil and facilitated significant changes in their local government. This was her way of personally making peace with her past.
CURRENT STATUS
In spite of how busy she has been since the First Reforms, it is clear that Kalika has made an effort to be a good mother to her children with Anton. While Anton spent most of his time on the road, Kalika stayed with her children while they were still too young to travel, and kept them close to her once they were able to join her on her missions. She only stopped traveling overseas extensively after the Armistice at Blaece, and spends most of her time bouncing between the Wolf’s Ward of Japan, Kibo (the Philippine Zangyaku powerbase that she is now in command of), and the Falner Estate.
PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE
An initial encounter with Kalika Shinta might leave one with the impression that the woman cares for little else beyond the Vigil, her conspiracy, and her family. That isn’t too far from the truth. Kalika is a survivor and a victim of some of the worst possible kinds of human violence, a Changing Breed who was an animal long before she was ever properly a person if only because the “natural order of things” seemed to make a lot more sense. Everything and everyone around her, outside of the small group whom she considers her kin, can only be categorized by their usefulness: hunter, hunted, threat, prey. This may be why she is rather slow to revise her opinion of someone after she feels that she has observed them well enough to pass judgment.
All of this lies beneath masks of Kalika’s own construction, one that portrays her as the cheerfully frank, lazy and indolent and horribly spoiled younger sister of the Blade King. She idolizes her brother, and models her sense of humanity after his own. As such, she is inclined towards carrying herself through the world with many masks just as he does, hiding what she is truly thinking or feeling according to the audience that she finds herself faced with. It is entirely possible for an individual to believe that they know Kalika intimately or that they are certain of the Magistrate’s opinion of them for their entire life – only for others to discover, without the other ever knowing, that he or she was thoroughly mistaken.
THREAT LEVEL
NOTABLE/NON-FACTOR. Technically speaking, Kalika is still within her prime, and is a rather influential figure by merit of her identity a one of the Wolfborn, as the Cat of the Searing Wind, and as a Magistrate of Zangyaku. Nevertheless, her loyalties have always been shared with her older brother’s, and since Hikaru believes in the cause, so does she.
