HISTORY
Blake grew up believing that he was the only child in a family that had fallen from grace and could not handle the destitution that they found themselves in. His mother was rabidly Catholic, and appeared, quite certainly, to be clinically insane. His father, to his knowledge, had succumbed to despair and committed suicide, abandoning his wife and his son. Unsurprisingly, Blake turned to every possible means that he had at his disposal to stay out of the house and find answers for himself: music, philosophies, religions, alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, and just about any dangerous practice that made him feel a little less numb. This is how he developed the persona “Drake Badd” for himself, because he supported himself by selling drugs.
By some miracle, Drake managed to finish college in the University of the Philippines, and by 24 he was, by his definition, a “real druggie”. At this point, Drake met Guinnevere Ramirez at a bar. He did not know, at the time, that Gwen was a Fifth Circle Hunter of the Methuselah – the only thing that stuck with him, beyond the fact that she was beautiful, was the fact that she was someone who could speak his language. The two of them ended up falling in love and sustained a relationship for over two years – but during that entire period, Gwen never told Drake about the World of Darkness, and what she really was.
During what should have been their third year together, Gwen lapsed into a deep depression over something that Drake did not understand (it did not help, of course, that Gwen never opened up to him), and started distancing herself from him until she disappeared completely from his life. The last thing she ever said to him was “"I'm fine. Go on without me. Live.” Drake later found out that she had committed suicide. In reality, however, Gwen had been killed by Jack the Ripper. Her depression had been caused by over exposure to Abomination that she was trying to destroy, and the loss of each one of her blade mates.
Losing Gwen made Drake spin completely out of control. He fell deeper into all of his bad habits, as his love for Gwen became an increased fixation with death itself. When he was finally at the bottom of his psychological pit, however, Drake found himself looking back at everything that had happened to him, and resolved, at that point, to continue living no matter what. He was 28 years old.
On the day of his major revelation, Drake was killed in a car accident. Rethe Kyriff happened to be in the area, though, and – because he could see that many geists were interested in latching on to Drake – offered Drake the chance to live again by binding him to a geist. The geist that Drake ended up taking the Bargain with was none other than Gwen herself. This served as Drake’s introduction to the World of Darkness, and he promptly became a Hunter of the Methuselah in order to hunt down the thing that had killed her blade and destroy it.
Drake’s first month with the Methuselah was interesting. Aidan Clayce took an interest in him, and the two of them quickly became friends. As soon as Drake was formally initiated as a Hunter of Anino, Aidan assigned him to join a group of hunters that seemed to suit him: An’yu Oyama, Selene Vega, Henry Lim, and 108. After a few sorties, their blade named themselves: the Rockin’ Rollas. Liana Panilio joined them after one of the Battle Royales of Anino; Mica Torillo followed later, after learning her abilities as a Card and completing her basic training with Ateneo de Manila University. Larz Hartzler became the last addition to their group.
The Rockin’ Rollas distinguished themselves in Anino for the engagements that they participated in with Wolf’s Choice and the Pack in 2012, and also for the work that they did outside of the Vigil. Drake holds the distinction for being one of the only operatives who managed to convince Hikaru Shinta to give his notebooks to Drake. The notebooks contained tip-offs and information on supernaturals in need, and potential recruits for the Methuselah and their allied conspiracies. Drake’s efforts ended up saving multitudes of people from making decisions that could have gotten them killed.
On another note, the Rockin’ Rollas are also attributed for doing remarkable investigation work and uncovering significant information with regard to Tala Vega’s nature as the Key, Hikaru Shinta’s “condition”, and dangerous movements within the Methuselah. Drake also ended up uncovering the truth behind the “suicide” of his father Archibald Desmond: the man had been an agent of Malleus Maleficarum, and had discovered the truth behind the relationship between the Shadow Congregation and the Lucifuge. That “truth” ended up getting Archibald killed – and, in an ultimate act of injustice, his superiors resurrected him as a Slasher and used him until he ran himself into the ground.
It’s also important to mention that Drake grew exceptionally close to Liana after hearing about how she lost her parents and became a Bladian. He adopted the girl in an effort to give her a home, and tried his best to stay clean both for her and for Gwen. He also resolved to marry Gwen, as a sign of his devotion to his geist and the relationship they had while she was still alive. Thankfully, his drive to join the Brotherhood of Violence (a move he took for himself both because he felt like he had found something better to believe in, and also because, at that time, he had been separated from Gwen in order to protect her from Jack the Ripper’s influence) wasn’t going to interfere with that in any fashion.
A little before Operation Nyx, Drake (by then a Hunter of Netsach, along with the entirety of the Rockin’ Rollas) spearheaded the battle against Jack the Ripper, which allowed to him to properly avenge Gwen and her blade. He also aided Selene Vega with destroying Cersei, the True Fae that had been responsible for kidnapping her and Tala. Another thing he handled was setting the stage for Netsach – together with the Thrones and the Brotherhood – to dismantle the Lucifuge by assassinating the Lady.
After his marriage to Gwen – his geist – in 2013 (the ceremony, interestingly enough, was held soon after Operation Nyx), Drake took a step back from his duties at Netsach in order to focus on aiding the Brotherhood of Violence, and be a proper father to Liana. By the time the Darkest Vigil occurred, Drake was given the distinguished title of “Godhand”, and was also the Cardinal of the Dragon Spires – the power base of the Brotherhood of Violence’s Province in the Philippines. He immediately assigned Paolo Inojosa as his Bishop. He remained within the Southeast Asian region, facilitating the Brotherhood’s activities against Grendal.
CURRENT STATUS
The Darkest Vigil gave Drake an equal amount of joy and heartbreak. He witnessed the death of Lars and – while he lived to see her get married and bear a son – he also had to bury Liana. There is also the fact that he was constantly on the field, and thus witnessed many of the atrocities that were committed during the wars. All of this may be contributing factors to his impending retirement from Hunting (rumor has it that he’s only going to stay on as an instructor of Balamb), beyond the fact that he wishes to be around for as long as he can for his grandson.
PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE
The personality Drake projects and the recklessness of his actions is, in many aspects, the precise opposite by which people should measure his worth. The experiences that Drake had for the first 28 years of his life scarred him, and were defined by a constant exposure to death, loss, and circumstances that were well beyond his control. His search for meaning was ultimately self-destructive for a reason: he did not believe, for a very long time, that life was pointless, he was pointless, and in the long run, nothing anyone ever did could amount to anything.
Being reunited with Gwen helped re-orient Drake, as did becoming a Hunter and being with his blade mates. As a general rule of thumb, such things would ultimately contribute to an individual’s destruction, especially since falling in love with the dead usually led to nothing (and falling in love with a geist had the tendency to be exceptionally worse). Perhaps it is testament to the nature of Gwen and Drake’s relationship while Gwen was alive that being united as Sin-Eater and geist/husband and wife actually helped. It is also important to note the significance to Drake’s relationship with Liana: being a father to her allowed him to become a “better man”, and give a child that had a similarly traumatic experience grow up properly, with a good support group. It is equally important to mention Drake’s friendship with Aidan. Drake holds the distinction of being one of the few individuals outside of the Malice Kings who could get through to the Voidseeker, and remind him that sometimes? People had to do exactly what they wanted in order to get the job done.
THREAT LEVEL
NOTABLE/NON-FACTOR. Drake is a powerful Sin-Eater in his own right, and is only strengthened by his unshakable belief in God and in the goodness of his cause. However, he is well past the age of retirement for Hunters, and is also retiring from his position within the Brotherhood. As such, he does not even pose a potential threat to the Vigil.
ELIAS’ NOTES
• Curiously, Godhand Badd does not appear to be as adversely affected as others who had suffered the same level of loss during the Darkest Vigil. This is not to say that he is “fine”, only that – all things considered – he is stable, and fully capable of serving until he chooses not to. Nevertheless, approach the Godhand re: retirement.I don’t ever want you to change, Drake, but you need a goddamned break.
