HISTORY
When he was still Gio Malaahas, Elias was the neglected younger son of a political family that had almost total control over several provinces in Northern Luzon. He grew up, it seemed, without the love and support of his parents, and did not get along at all with his older brother – the only person who appeared to care for him was Amado Batumbakal, his bodyguard. A chance encounter with the Darkness in Mapayapa Village placed him in contact with Tala Vega and David Young – his future blade mates in Wolf’s Choice, and people he would later grow very close to – and became the first step towards discovering his legacy as a Mage. It was later revealed that an early manifestation of his magical powers had frightened his father, and – rather than attempting to help Elias – his father tried his best to hold his son at arm’s length, wrongfully thinking that this was the best way of protecting him. Amado, as things turned out, was an Inquisitor of Anino, the Methuselah’s power base in the Philippines: he had approached the Malaahas Family in order to monitor Elias. The Malaahas Family in itself turned out to be descendants of a long and proud line of Mages: the first, in fact, in the archipelago.
Aidan took Elias in, and had the boy train with the Hunters of Ateneo de Manila University. Elias later came in contact with the rest of the members of Wolf’s Choice, and started devoting himself fully to being a Keeper of the Vigil. His seriousness and dedication were the main reasons why he became one of the leaders of his blade. These qualities were also what led him to work tirelessly towards finding solutions for the Methuselah, and – interestingly enough – what pushed him to start uncovering the many damaging secrets that his own conspiracy was harboring. Two of them happened to be Project Deux Ex Machina (the project responsible for Hikaru Shinta’s “condition”) and Project Arachne (the project that created Sawyer Mesch, a girl that Elias counted among his first friends). Elias, in fact, is responsible for several key initiatives within Anino, including bringing Inquisitor Mesch out of her coma, restoring lost supply lines for Vice Enterprises, bolstering recruitment for the conspiracy, serving as a liaison to potential allies, and later developing the ritual that saved Hikaru’s life – but ultimately bound Hikaru to Death, as His Vessel. He balanced all of this with aiding nearly all of his blade mates with their personal business, and developing deep rapport with many key figures within the Vigil, most especially the Malice Kings.
Elias did not hesitate to join Netsach after Aidan Clayce defected from the Methuselah, and continued to do the same level of work for Netsach as he had for the Methuselah. On a positive note, it was during this time that he came to terms with his feelings for Tala Vega, the Key – the two of them decided to take a shot at romance together. He also began to receive the Attainments of the Legacy of the Pure Sovereigns, something that would allow him to remain in the perfect position to solve any problem that came his way. However, on the flip side, this was also when he was forced to sever the earthly ties that he possessed to his human family as a sacrifice to the 195th floor of the Unnamed Tower, just as he was beginning to get along with his parents and his brother.
It should be noted that throughout all of this, Elias’ thoughts remained with the conspiracy that had been his first home. Even as he was throwing himself into preparations against Nyx and doing what he could to improve Netsach as a conspiracy, he was also searching for a means to restore the Methuselah to its proper glory. Thankfully, surviving Operation Nyx meant that he was now in the perfect opportunity to do that.
Many had thought that since he would be starting from scratch, it would take Elias only too long to fulfill his vision. What few knew was the fact that Elias and Maeniel Gemini – an Inquisitor of the Methuselah, and a member of its interim Wiseman’s Committee – had a plan, and setting things into motion required that Elias be in a good position of authority to see it through. Elias balanced his life as a university student of Ateneo de Manila University with an illustrious Hunting career, taking point on handling many of the incidents that occurred during the Breaking of the Veil. He also trained extensively under Tohru Fukuzawa, who finally got to pass down the techniques he had acquired as an expert in supernatural shutdown and control to someone who could be trusted, and had enough talent to make use of those skills. In 2015, he reached the rank of Inquisitor, both within the Methuselah and within Netsach. He graduated from Ateneo at roughly the same time, because he had advanced one too many classes.
Elias left the Philippines at this point, and headed to Israfil in Turkey, where the Methuselah had relocated its headquarters. He moved away from active Hunting in order to join the Smaller Council of the Methuselah, which served as the conspiracy’s counterbalance to the Committee and the Committee’s pool of potential replacements whenever one of the Wisemen died. He kept in close contact with Maeniel, and the two of them tirelessly worked to get Elias into the Committee. Naturally, the pair faced a lot of opposition: many sectors of the Methuselah were only too traditional in their thinking, and slow to embrace the changes that the Fifth World was going through. Thankfully, Maeniel managed to pull a fast one on the lot: he resurrected a very old tenant that Aidan Clayce and Riley Falner had put in place over 4,000 years ago: that Wisemen could be voted out if they proved “incapable of ruling the conspiracy”, and “incapability” could be proven through a trial by combat. Through quick thinking and maneuvering within the Small Council, Elias was voted into the Wiseman’s Committee in 2018.
His first move as one of the Committee was to use that same tenant to replace every other unsuitable Wiseman with people who were friendlier to the Methuselah’s new cause: to serve as a bridge between the World of Light and the World of Darkness. He handpicked the first roster of the new Committee, filling the seats – each one a representation of an important sector within the Vigil – with people whom he deeply respected, or knew personally. His second move was to elevate the position of the Small Council, making them the effective “ruling council” of the Methuselah as a conspiracy. This would allow the Wiseman’s Committee to focus solely on being mediators.
(Interestingly enough, Jessiah Vice declined the Committee position that Elias attempted to offer him – he was supposed to represent the interests of Cards all around the globe. He declared that he had no interest in further helping a conspiracy that had crossed him one too many times, regardless of how much they were slated to change.)
One of the first things Elias did in order to celebrate his achievements was marry Tala in the same year that he overhauled the Committee. Many say that he and Tala were “pressured” into it by his best friend David Young, who had married Mica just a year before they decided to tie the knot. Their honeymoon, however, did not last: things were looking difficult in the Fifth World, and both Elias and Tala had a keen interest in keeping things afloat.
Elias was an influential figure during the First Reforms and the Darkest Vigil. He was one of the founders of New Atlantis, and he – beyond leading the Wiseman’s Committee – was constantly on the frontlines during all of the major engagements that took place within those fifty years. He earned his moniker, the Peacemaker, during this period, following the single time that he participated in the Ceremony of Measuring (Hikaru Shinta pushed his brother-in-law into it, even though he knew that Elias had no interest in becoming part of the Searing Wind). Furthermore, he started an entirely new committee within the Methuselah: the Erinyes. Their sole role was to serve as the Methuselah’s swift response team to crises of the Balance. Their members comprised of his closest friends.
CURRENT STATUS
Provided, with our gratitude, by Inquisitor David Young.
Naturally, Elias did not settle down in the least after the Armistice at Blaece. He still continues to travel the world on Vigil business, and still presides over the yearly meetings of the Wiseman’s Committee. Suffice to say, David and Anton have been pestering him about “sitting the fuck down” and “popping out some kids of his own”.
PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE
Provided, with our gratitude, by Hikaru Shinta, as Wiseman Tagabigay cannot be expected to provide a purely objective measure of his disposition at present.
Elias’ early introduction to the World of Darkness and the life of a Hunter, together with several defining events that forced him to make hard decisions, have given Elias the characteristics of a child soldier – that is, someone almost obsessively dedicated to the cause, and almost totally incapable of separating himself from his beliefs and his work. He possesses a strategist’s mind, and has the tendency to measure every being he encounters according to their capabilities. His friends and loved ones are not spared from this in the slightest, even if the feelings he may harbor for them are genuine. Elias is all about solving problems, and constantly occupies himself with this business: the concept of taking a break is alien to him, and he is always looking for new ways of making him absolutely efficient.
Initially, it may appear as though Elias’ decision to become a Pure Sovereign was simply a logical decision on his part, as it provided him with the means of being nearly immortal and completely rid him of most human weaknesses (i.e. the need for sleep, the subjective and messy nature of emotion). In reality, however, it may actually be a form of escapism. Dealing with loss, coupled with the guilt he feels over the actions he has taken in the past (especially during the First Reforms and the Darkest Vigil), has left deep scars on Elias’ psyche. Following this logic, it is likely that he cannot actually process his own emotions, and thus prefers to turn them off entirely in order to continue fulfilling his role as a Hunter. He has no desire to be compromised in any fashion, as he is only too aware of his importance within today’s Vigil.
THREAT LEVEL
Provided, with our gratitude, by Inquisitor Jessiah Vice, in order to prevent a conflict of interest (Wiseman Tagabigay has written every other threat assessment within the Committee’s files).
COMMENDABLE/FACTOR (5%). Elias’ contributions to the Vigil are immeasurable – in fact, it may not be too much of a stretch to say that he holds the distinction of defining much of the Vigil’s climate at present. Furthermore, his position as a Pure Sovereign and a Mage of exceptional power make him a force to reckon with on and off of the battlefield. Should he choose to abuse the influence he has at his disposal or succumb to Hubris, there is little that the majority of the Vigil’s Keepers could do anything to stop him. Fortunately, as this stand at the moment, this is a rather distant possibility.
AIDAN CLAYCE’S NOTES
There is a special sort of pride that comes with seeing the work of a single man and knowing that, in some fashion, you are responsible for his growth, and can say, with confidence, that you are honored to be called one of his mentors.
Nevertheless, figures like myself are responsible for all aspects of Elias Tagabigay’s development. We took him into the Vigil too soon: we are the ones who, in pursuit of the truth and the “greater good”, robbed him of his childhood. There is nothing we can do to undo the damage, or heal the scars.
I wish you well, Elias Tagabigay. May you never fall as I fell, long ago. And, proud as I am of your achievements and glad as I am of our friendship, I am sorry.
