HISTORY
The first eight years of Kaizen’s life were pleasant, if only because he was still unaware of the circumstances of his birth. Until he was targeted, yet again, by the machinations of the Fifth World’s “Machinery”, the only thing he knew for certain was that his house had caught fire, and both of his parents were dead. Between the ages of 8 and 24, Kaizen lived on his own in the care of a woman named Mari Tess. It would later be revealed that Mari Tess was one of Anino’s Watchers: she had been assigned to keep him under surveillance, and inform Anino if he was in danger. Eventually, the Machinery located Kaizen, and attacked him.
Setsuna Shinta intervened at this point. She used part of the time that the Creator had allocated for her, embodying herself as a human in order to defend Kaizen and bring him to Aidan. The three then traveled to Metro Manila, where Aidan introduced Kaizen to the World of Darkness and the Vigil. Aidan also revealed the identity of Kaizen’s father: the Mover of Sands and Time, one of the strongest djinn of the Fifth World. Kaizen agreed to become a Hunter, and began to train with the Hunters of Ateneo de Manila University. He eventually joined the future members of the blade Wolf’s Choice (namely Elias Tagabigay, Tala Vega and David Young), and participated in a few engagements before deciding to break away and travel to the Middle East in search of his father.
Kaizen’s reunion with the Mover of Sands and Time did not go well. The only thing he was able to get out of the Mover was the fact that his mother had been a Japanese priestess, and had – through a powerful ritual – managed to bind the Mover and impose a Wish upon him (that he be her husband, and give her a son). The seals that kept the Mover in place undid themselves when Kaizen was eight, thus causing the firestorm (a result of the Mover awakening and drifting away) that took his mother’s life. Kaizen returned to his blade mates, and – together with members of the Rockin’ Rollas and the Pack – journeyed to Japan, with Hikaru and Setsuna’s blessing, to learn more about his mother. The results were also unsatisfactory, as it all pointed towards the cold truth: his mother had never cared for having a family, and everything – having the Mover under her control, having a powerful son that was neither human nor djinn – was simply an experiment on her part, and a means for her to affirm her power as a priestess.
Now that he had solved the mystery of his past, Kaizen proceeded to focus on Keeping the Vigil. He involved himself deeply with investigations and research, especially in the realm of relics and Fifth World anomalies. He also tried to unlock more of the mystery of his nature, as he was fully aware of the fact that other Qashmallim like himself could appear at any moment. When Aidan Clayce left the Methuselah, joining Netsach was something that Kaizen did out of principle: beyond the fact that he was incredibly loyal to his blade and the other operatives whom he had been working closely with since his initiation, Aidan and Setsuna had personally saved his life, and Hikaru was somebody whom he had come to view as his new family. It should be noted that his relationship with the Mover remained difficult, in spite of the fact that the pair more than occasionally came into contact through dreams.
Kaizen is personally responsible for the recovery of some of the most powerful relics in the Fifth World, and the assistance that he provided Aegis Kai Doru with in the final months before Operation Nyx earned him no small amount of respect among the Keepers of the Labyrinth. He was the first Keeper of the Vigil to reach the Forgotten Shore (hence putting him in contact with Minato, and giving Netsach the opening that they needed in order to bring him back), and his research was used as the foundations for the ritual that allowed Netsach to take Cersei – Winter Herself, and the True Fae responsible for kidnapping Tala and Selene Vega – down. It was also during this period that he became aware of Vergil, and took charge of his rescue and recovery from Italy. He took care of the boy while balancing his duties to Netsach all the way until Operation Nyx, a major engagement that he participated in together with the rest of his blade.
Kaizen took his adopted son Vergil and left for the Middle East immediately only days after Operation Nyx. He set his duties to Netsach and to Zangyaku aside in favor of training in Aegis Kai Doru, and gaining a license with the Relic Hunters. Brimstone – a trusted comrade of his from Arcadia – and Akira Tendo – a dual-licensed Aegis Kai Doru and Zangyaku hunter that he had gone on several major operations with – ended up becoming his cell mates. While he was in the Middle East, he focused on the research, acquisition and creation of as many relics as he could, and being with his son. Interestingly enough, this also put him in close contact with the Mover of Sands and Time, his own father. The relationship between the two of them improved immensely, especially since the Mover was being positively influenced by the shift in the Balance that had occurred after Nyx’s destruction.
By the time the Darkest Vigil occurred, Kaizen had gained his third Hunting license, and was the Guardian Keeper of the Philippine Chapter of Aegis Kai Doru. He was, however, forced to leave the management of the chapter to some of his closest confidants the moment Claire Anders called him in to locate Ra’s Shadow, and search for the Lost Legacy of Aegis Kai Doru and the Order of the Phoenix within it. This would occupy Kaizen and his team for the next twenty years.
From 2042 – the end of the Phoenix War – to 2060, Kaizen shuttled between the Middle East and Africa. First he focused on helping Aegis Kai Doru and the Ascending Ones, then moved on to relief operations in the areas that were adversely affected by the conflict. Once that was done, he retired to his Hunting duties and joined anti-Grendal operations on both continents. After the Armistice at Blaece, Kaizen did not even bother to take some time out to recuperate: he spearheaded an Aegis initiative geared towards the recovery of relics that had been lost during the Darkest Vigil.
CURRENT STATUS
Of all of the Wolf’s Choice members, Kaizen is the hunter who is seen the least. Now that the dust has settled from the Darkest Vigil, Aegis Kai Doru is fielding all of their best agents across the globe in search of relics. Nevertheless, his is a solid presence that his comrades know that they can always rely upon when they need to.
PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE
Emotion is a distant and confusing sensation for Qashmallim like Kaizen, and it is something that constantly rebels against his thirst for knowledge and drive to know the unknowable, and understand what many believe to be incomprehensible. He understands the world through patterns, including the codes – spoken and unspoken – that human beings use whenever they communicate with each other. Whatever does not fit the pattern disturbs him, and since there are only too many things that do not fit the pattern yet also don’t seem to have any ready answer, Kaizen chooses to ignore them entirely. This is not to say that he refuses to feel: this simply means that feeling, for him, is difficult, and he always needs time to reflect on the situation and puzzle over his own emotions before expressing his own opinions on the matter, or acting on them.
Nevertheless, Kaizen retains some incredibly strong “human” ties to any individual whom he views to be family. He has no “friends”, only people he would regard as a relation – namely, his cell mates in Aegis, his comrades in Netsach (particularly the Malice Kings, his blade mates, and members of the Rockin’ Rollas and the Pack), and his adopted family in the members of the Shinta Clan. This may be grounded on his human feelings of abandonment and betrayal as a result of his very existence, together with the loneliness that comes with knowing that only one other being on earth shares his “nature”. He has a strong need to make sure that those closest to him never feel the way that he did, as he can only imagine what it must be like for creatures who are constantly “victimized” by their emotions. This is especially evident in the way that he treats Vergil, his adopted son. Kaizen has proven, time and again, that – cold, logical and pragmatic as he is, and strict in his personal dedication to the Vigil – he will drop everything in order to personally eliminate any perceivable threat to his family.
THREAT LEVEL
COMMENDABLE/NON-FACTOR. While Kaizen possesses an incredible amount of power and an immeasurable amount of potential due to his nature as a Qashmallim, he is also strictly logical and aware of the needs of the Balance. It is unlikely that he will ever turn against the wishes of Pax Deorum – and if he does, he will certainly have a good reason for it.

Remind him, as well, about family dinner. If Kasumi can’t have Alistair around, I might as well make sure that she has the two of us and Anton…
