HISTORY
An’yu was the only son of his father, the older of two children and the one, by merit of the fact that he was the son, slated to inherited the Oyama Sword Style. Unfortunately, An’yu’s aunt – the daughter, and the child that was not meant to have any real inheritance – was the one who ended up being skilled with a blade. An’yu’s father possessed no aptitude for sword fighting, and was much better as a blacksmith – the Oyama family’s other trade. As a result, An’yu spent the entirety of his life being pushed unfairly by his father, and turned into a means for his father to live vicariously through him.

A run-in with a Pandoran during his first day in Metro Manila turned An’yu’s life around. He was saved by Asuna Mustang and some Anino operatives, and ended up joining the Methuselah in order to find some answers. The Pandoran had knocked him into a supernatural coma where he dreamt of his grandfather Saitou’s past, and Saitou’s relationship with Hikaru Shinta. An’yu, with Aidan Clayce’s blessing, ended up going back to his home in Mindinao in Henry Lim’s company and discovering his grandfather’s diaries. He used these to train himself further, and start unlocking his nature as an Alchemist.

Aidan had An’yu assigned as a novice to the Rockin’ Rollas, Henry’s blade. Henry was the one who actually helped An’yu find Lily, the first Promethean who would teach him. Interestingly enough, Lily had been Saitou’s Promethean lover: Saitou, in spite of his feelings for Lily, ended up choosing An’yu’s grandmother over Lily. After getting over her embitterment over who An’yu was, Lily began to teach An’yu in earnest – she even instructed Kaien Yamazaki of the Searing Wind to guide the boy in her place whenever she was not available. However, An’yu’s own lust for power pushed Lily, in the interests of protecting him, to remove herself from “the Game” of the Fifth World entirely, jeopardizing the Methuselah’s relations with the local Created.

The incident proved to be just the kind of wake-up call that An’yu needed. Humbled by his own actions, the boy submitted himself to the sanctions that Aidan levied on him, and remained under “house arrest” for a significant period of time, joining his blade for engagements only when he was allowed to – he spent most of this period training under Kaien, and redeeming himself both to his master and to the conspiracies of the Methuselah and Netsach. Eventually, his house arrest was revoked, and he allowed to attempt to trace the footsteps of Saitou and follow the trajectory of his grandfather’s Pilgrimage in order to get in touch with his family’s history. This was something that An’yu balanced between missions with his blade, and with the likes of Wolf’s Choice and the Pack. He continued to train under Kaien, and befriended Asuna, the girl who had saved him before he had ever joined the Methuselah. He also caught the attention of Roy Mustang, Asuna’s father and the Head of the Order of the Golden Dawn. It was An’yu, in fact, who eventually convinced Roy to pick a side in the conflict between the Methuselah, Zangyaku, and Netsach.

One of the more significant things that occurred for An’yu because of his Pilgrimage was coming in contact with Prometheans whom Saitou had grown close to. One of them was a Sakata Gintoki, a powerful Pandoran that wished to work towards redemption as though he were one of the Created. Gintoki became both a mentor and a friend to An’yu, and provided a great amount of insight into the Promethean and Alchemist that Saitou had once been.

Shortly before Operation Nyx, An’yu – by then a Hunter of Netsach just like the rest of his blade mates and the friends he had made within Wolf’s Choice and the Pack – managed to get through to Asuna and successfully express the feelings that he had developed for the girl. He also managed to convince Gintoki to stop fence sitting and aid the Keepers of the Vigil. Unfortunately, while An’yu survived the fight, Gintoki ended up sacrificing himself to protect the members of the Heimdall Contingent from a fatal blow from Nyx.

Even though he and Asuna officially engaged in a romantic relationship sometime before Operation Nyx, An’yu had to work for five, long, difficult years as Roy’s apprentice before the man granted him permission to marry his daughter. From that point onward, An’yu directed his energies towards serving as Netsach’s liaison to the Golden Dawn, and to Zangyaku. He quickly ascended in the ranks of all three organizations.

An’yu distinguished himself for the field work he devoted himself to during the First Reforms, and the Darkest Vigil – he traveled around the globe, both to complete his grandfather Saitou’s Pilgrimage and to create Golden Dawn safehouses for Prometheans wherever he could. Later, during the Darkest Vigil, the only time he participated in major campaigns was when they happened to be close to his current location. Some of his old comrades were surprised by this, given An’yu’s fighting spirit. He explained it as his attempt to pay homage to Lily.

In 2046, An’yu, by then an Inquisitor of Netsach and a Ten-ranked oni-tsukai of Zangyaku, replaced Kaien as the new Alchemist of the Searing Wind. He spent the remainder of the Darkest Vigil balancing his pet project for the Golden Dawn and his duties to the Wolf as a field operative of Zangyaku.

CURRENT STATUS
Has returned to the Philippines and settled down permanently since the Armistice at Blaece. Now serves part-time as an instructor at Balamb and Kalika Shinta’s second over at Kibo, and is almost always accompanied by Sadaharu, Gintoki’s Pandoran dragon companion. Those closest to An’yu claim that the Alchemist has been looking into ways of bringing Gintoki back.

PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE
Every aspect of An’yu’s personality and every action he takes are defined by his beliefs, and his beliefs are solidly centered on the main law of nature: that strength determines everything, and one only deserves to live if one decides to be strong. While this used to manifest in a self-destructive tendency to compromise all things, including other people, in pursuit of whatever might happen to make him better than the rest, this drive now keeps An’yu in line. This change in direction can be attributed to Lily’s disappearance – An’yu’s first real wounding, given the fact that he alone could take responsibility for it – and the way he retraced the footsteps of Saitou Oyama, his grandfather, by doing Saitou’s Pilgrimage all over again.

An’yu is stable now because the passing of the years and the many things he has down have made him perfectly aware of his strengths and weaknesses, his limitations both as a human being and as an Alchemist. He is one of those rare individuals who is perfectly attuned to what he believes to be his place in the larger picture of things.

THREAT LEVEL
COMMENDABLE/NON-FACTOR. It has long since been proven that An’yu’s age does not appear to have slowed him down in the slightest. Furthermore, his clout with organizations like Netsach, Zangyaku, and the Order of the Golden Dawn could make him a formidable foe for many. He is the kind of man who will only respect strength, and if it becomes clear to him that the leaders of today’s Vigil are not strong, he may take action.

ELIAS’ NOTES
You still owe me that favor, An’yu.

AFFILIATED COMPACTS/CONSPIRACIES:

  • The Methuselah, pre-2012 (Anino; Blade: “The Rockin’ Rollas”)
  • The Brotherhood of Violence (Sister in Violence, The Dragon Spires)
  • Netsach (Inquisitor of Cerberus and Ziz; Blade: “The Rockin’ Rollas”)

OTHER AFFILIATED GROUPS:

  • The Harper-Hartzler Hospital (Field Operative)

TACTICAL DESIGNATION: Saboteur, Healer
FAVORED WEAPONS: Daggers
COMBAT ASSESSMENT: Aggressive mid-range fighter that would rather focus fire on already disabled or injured enemies and expend her efforts on controlling the crowd. Gears her abilities towards wiping out as many opponents as possible, or rendering them vulnerable for her comrades to follow up her moves.

HISTORY
For all intents and purposes, Liana should have died in a car accident at the age of fourteen, together with her parents. She walked away from the smoldering ruins instead, bonded to a Bloodsinger that she would later name Reek. Anino operatives took the girl in, and balanced her training at Ateneo de Manila University with starting her high school studies on another campus. She met the members of Wolf’s Choice, the Pack, and the Rockin’ Rollas during Anino’s annual Battle Royale, and – because she ended up with one of the highest ranks in her batch – was assigned to become one of the novices under Drake Badd’s care. She and Drake ended up becoming very close over a series of engagements, and Drake eventually adopted her as his daughter. The rest of her blade mates, together with many members of Wolf’s Choice, became her surrogate siblings.

Liana followed the rest of her blade mates to Netsach, and continued to distinguish herself as a Hunter in spite of her age. She participated in the battle against the Blade King in Hokkaido, was one of the first operatives to enter the Unnamed Tower, and also took part in Operation Nyx. She also made it a point to assist her blade mates with their personal business prior to the final fight.

In 2013, during Hikaru Shinta’s 26th birthday, Liana was cordially invited to the yearly Measuring Ceremony of the Searing Wind. This resulted in her becoming a member of the Wind at fifteen, and one of the few Bladians to hold a position in Zangyaku (the honor was usually reserved to Hikaru Shinta himself, as no other Bladian in the world could hope to be better or equal to the Blade King). She ended up meeting William Frostholm – a Moros Mage, and her future husband – while she was working to reach a rank that she personally considered worthy of her title. The two of them got married when Liana was 25.

Liana focused her efforts on contributing as much as possible to Netsach and Zangyaku initiatives during the Breaking of the Veil and the First Reforms, and extended her own Hunting career by getting yet another hunting license, this time with the Brotherhood of Violence. She was also on the front lines of the fighting in Russia. Interestingly enough, she did not die in battle; she passed away in her sleep in 2037, after a particularly difficult battle.

PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE
The traumatic nature of her awakening caused Liana to spend the first few months of her newfound life constantly deferring to the wishes of her bloodsinger, and deliberately avoiding any and all opportunities to act or think independently. Becoming a Hunter and developing close, familial relations with her blade mates eventually provided the support system that she needed, and their strong personalities ended up pushing Liana towards re-learning how to make her own decisions.

Initially, Drake Badd took care of everything for Liana, as he genuinely wanted to become the father that she barely got to have. Midway through Liana’s life, however, she became the one taking care of him. In fact, it may be safe to say that her decision to get married early was partially motivated by the fact that she knew that Bladians like herself were not going to live for very long, and the last thing she wanted to do was to die, knowing that Drake was going to be left with nothing.
