HISTORY
Lars was the only son of a Goliath and Karen Hartzler, two skilled doctors from America. Their perfect family broke apart when Lars was seven. His mother passed away because of brain cancer, and her loss appeared to unhinge his father. Goliath became physically abusive the farther and farther he spiraled into depression, and ended up severely injuring his own son before disappearing. Lars ended up paralyzed from the waist down.
At that point, a woman named Sharon – a family friend – took Lars in and raised him by herself, as Lars did not have any relatives of his own. While Lars loved Sharon as he had loved his mother, he was emotionally distant from everyone else. The grief over losing his mother at a young age and having his own father turn on him had scarred him. His disability and the “unfairness” of his situation vis-à-vis the rest of mankind also became a point of obsession for him, and the sole reason why he decided to work hard and take up medicine. He was advanced several years throughout grade school, high school, college and med school, and ended up gaining his license to practice at 23. Lars, however, only managed to work at a hospital in his area for two months before getting bored and moving to support himself by going underground as a doctor for customers that could not check in to more legitimate places. He eventually moved on to balance this with experimenting on willing subjects, all in pursuit of trying to find a cure for his disability.
Lars moved to the Philippines once he turned 24 in order to ensure that he stayed on the down low and avoided the authorities; Sharon, who was fully aware of his practices, came with him in order to continue to assist him. His official job, by 2012, was working at the Manila Campus of the University of the Philippines as a professor for their pre-Medicine courses. Life changed for him within a few months, when he was kidnapped by the Morningstar Corporation. While he was being held in a cell, he came across the body of a fallen oni-tsukai with a Bloodsinger standing over it. That bloodsinger was Tsubaki, whom he agreed to forge a pact with in order to gain the use of his legs back. As a trade-off, he agreed to follow her cause: being a Keeper of the Vigil.
Methuselah operatives eventually rescued Lars together with their own kidnapped comrades. Lars was rescued, in particular, by members of the Rockin’ Rollas, led by Drake Badd. He agreed to join the Methuselah, especially after he learned that they were aware of his “history” and were willing to take him in as a means of honoring Tsubaki’s wishes. It was at this point that Lars learned a little more about Sharon: she was a retired Watcher, and had taken Lars in and treated him like a son because she had once been in love with his father. His father, interestingly enough, had actually been an operative of Liberty, the Methuselah’s main power base in the United States of America. This cemented Lars’ decision to stay with the Methuselah, as the conspiracy may have been able to provide him with more information on his father.
Lars stayed on as one of Anino’s doctors on call within Ateneo de Manila University’s campus all the way until Aidan Clayce created the Methuselah. Beyond handling these specific duties for his fellow operatives, he participated in all engagements that his blade involved themselves with, and also did missions with the Pack and Wolf’s Choice. He later followed his blade – the Rockin’ Rollas – to Netsach, and established a formal Medical Bay for the fledgling conspiracy; he was assisted by Franco del Vega, whom he later mentored. Being a Keeper of the Vigil actually brought Lars in touch with his humanity, and it was not too long before the once semi-sociopathic doctor found himself attached to his blade mates and the other Hunters he was in close proximity with, and dedicating himself to the cause less out of an interest in research and more out of principle. It helped, of course, that he eventually managed to learn what he needed about his father. Goliath and Sharon had been blade mates, and a spirit of despair had driven him mad. He had turned on his son less because he had hated Lars, but because his behavior was out of his control. Eventually, the Methuselah had put a mark on Goliath, and his and Sharon’s blade mates decided to take him down themselves.
A few months into his career with Netsach, Lars met Miriam Harper – a powerful psychic, and a doctor like himself – through Hikaru Shinta. Lars and Miriam worked together at Netsach’s Med Bay, and eventually fell in love. Their relationship, interestingly enough, was only strengthened by the personal ordeal that Lars ended up going through because of the Unnamed Tower: he sacrificed the use of his legs all over again in order to gain the right to participate in the fight against Nyx, and – through rehabilitation and Vice technology – had to re-learn how to use his legs. Lars ended up proposing to Miriam a little before Operation Nyx.
Both Lars and Miriam survived the battle, and married each other in 2013, Lars focused his energies on building a hospital in the Philippines. He envisioned the hospital as a Red Cross equivalent of the Hunt, serving all of the Keepers of the Vigil without discrimination. Because of his hard work, the hospital – named the Harper-Hartzler Hospital – was fully operational by 2017 in the Visayas region of the country. It later became an ideal location for negotiations between the conspiracies, because of its deliberate lack of allegiance to or preference for any one conspiracy.
Tragedy struck Lars’ life in the form of a Grendal attack on his hospital, one that resulted in the critical injury of his wife and both of his children. His succumbing to Rapture over the incident was stymied by Hikaru before it could kill Lars, but it caused a great strain on his health. This may be part of the reason why he died in 2035, twenty-five years before the end of the Darkest Vigil. A memorial statue of him has recently been placed in front of the hospital, donated by Zangyaku.
PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE
Loss and trauma at an early age stunted Lars’ growth considerably. Between the age of 7 and 24, the man placed his faith solely on the foundations of science and logic: what was “certain”, versus the uncertainties of emotion. He deadened himself to the suffering of others, using the knowledge of his chosen profession – one traditionally grounded in empathy and a desire to heal others – for purely selfish reasons. He subscribed himself to a simple belief: that so many people were lucky to be able to walk and possess the simple gift of being able to do so much with their bodies, and yet the majority of these people did not deserve them. He was, for a long time, the doctor who could not heal anyone, not even himself.
Becoming a Bladian (and, by extension, a Hunter) ironically became the turning point in Lars’ life. Beyond the fact that Hunting gave him many of the answers that he was looking for with regard to his family, it also gave him a second chance, especially since his bloodsinger Tsubaki healed his paralysis. That his life span was drastically shortened because of his singer did not matter: what mattered, in Lars’ eyes, were the result. As such, he rose above his bitterness and decided to live, and to live well, if only because he wanted to be there for the people who had ended up opening his world.
ELIAS’ NOTES
Rest in peace, Lars.
